Tip 63: Make the Familiar Unfamiliar

Develop your sense of key by singing the familiar in an unfamiliar way.

Sing (or play) a simple song that you know really well – a children’s nursery rhyme like ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ for example (don’t pick anything too complicated!) Decide if the song is major or minor (most nursery rhymes are major).

Now try to sing the song but in a minor key! You will have to make changes to particular degrees of the key scale. ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ would start A – A – E – E – F – F – E, for example – can you continue it?
