Tip 3: Listen to Music Across Cultures and Eras

Increase your knowledge and understanding of music by listening to music from different cultures and different time periods.

Find music online, or borrow CDs from your local library. As your general awareness begins to increase, you’ll probably start to notice that a lot of so called ‘familiar’ music contains references to lesser known genres.

Then, look up some information on the composer, artist or type of music you were listening to. Decide whether you like it or not, but more importantly, try to explain WHY you came to that decision.
